YouTube’s Shorts feature, designed for vertical video consumption, has been facing tough competition from platforms like Instagram Reels and TikTok. To enhance its competitive edge, YouTube is implementing a significant change in how it calculates video views, a metric that has traditionally followed a specific rule.
Boost in YouTube Shorts Views
Previously, the view count for YouTube Shorts relied on users watching the video for a certain duration, which led to lower view counts compared to rival platforms. Starting from March 31, 2025, YouTube will count each start or re-watch of a Shorts video as a view. This change is anticipated to drastically increase the view counts for YouTube Shorts.
However, the criteria for monetization will remain unchanged, requiring videos to be watched for a specified amount of time before they can generate revenue. This ensures that while the view count metric evolves, the quality engagement metric remains consistent.
