Yang Chao Faces Investigation for Alleged Misconduct

Yang Chao, the former president and party secretary of China Life Insurance Co, is currently under investigation for potential breaches of Party discipline and state law. This investigation is being conducted by China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).

The CCDI announced the investigation via an official statement, which was subsequently reported by Reuters. Yang’s probe adds to the growing list of compliance inquiries targeting figures in China’s state-owned financial institutions.

The CCDI has not disclosed additional details regarding the specific nature of the alleged violations, and there is no timeline provided for the investigation’s conclusion. As of now, China Life Insurance has not issued any public comments regarding the situation.

Yang’s case emerges amid China’s ongoing, extensive anti-corruption campaign, which has a specific focus on the financial services sector. Financial, energy, and sports industries have been identified as key areas for scrutiny as part of these regulatory efforts aimed at strengthening internal controls and governance.

Earlier this year, during a three-day plenary session of the CCDI in Beijing, senior Chinese leaders affirmed their commitment to combatting corruption. According to a summary of the meeting, the commission reviewed disciplinary and supervisory actions from 2024 and established goals for 2025.

The session featured remarks from Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, who underscored the necessity of sustained vigilance. In 2024, enforcement actions targeted issues such as excessive spending and bureaucratic inefficiency, while new corruption investigations were launched across key sectors.

The CCDI reported that 68 Party and government departments underwent regular inspections last year. The commission has indicated that in 2025, it will intensify its focus on preventing and uncovering less overt forms of misconduct, such as the misuse of authority for personal gain by public officials or their families involved in private businesses.

Mechanisms for early detection and tighter supervision are expected to play a significant role in forthcoming enforcement strategies. The CCDI’s communique also highlighted the necessity of addressing practices that distort competition or increase compliance burdens at the local level.

Anti-corruption efforts are anticipated to be closely aligned with the country’s modernization objectives, integrating governance reforms with economic development priorities.
