An Architectural Gem Rises from Ashes

The Aziziye Mosque, nestled in the bustling Bedesten Bazaar of the Karatay district, stands as a testament to architectural resilience and artistic brilliance. Originally constructed between 1671 and 1676 by Damat Mustafa Pasha, the mosque suffered extensive damage during the devastating Konya fire of 1867.

A Fusion of Styles by the Renowned Balyan Family

In the aftermath of the disaster, the esteemed Armenian Balyan family took on the task of redesigning the mosque. With the patronage of Sultan Abdülaziz’s mother, Pertevniyal Valide Sultan, the structure was reimagined in the elaborate baroque and rococo styles. By 1874, the mosque was magnificently restored and reopened for worship, distinguishing itself with an unusual architectural feature: windows larger than its doors.

A Unique Architectural Treasure

Mehmet Pıçak, head of the Aziziye Mosque Protection and Sustenance Association, highlights the mosque’s singular position among Islamic architectural works. He states, “The Aziziye Mosque, originally built with shops beneath it, was completely destroyed in the 1867 fire. Rebuilt in 1874, it remains one of Turkey’s rare foundation mosques.”

“The disproportionately large windows were designed to maximize daylight and create a warm ambiance. This design choice is consistent with the Balyan family’s other works, such as the Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque and the Beylerbeyi Palace. The restoration involved the use of 6-7 kilograms of gold to emphasize its opulence.”

A Magnet for Visitors Worldwide

Today, the Aziziye Mosque ranks as the second most visited site in Konya, following the Mevlana Museum. Its global appeal lies in its unique architectural features—a single dome, two minarets with precise, column-free designs, and a visually striking facade. The mosque’s unparalleled harmony draws admirers from around the world, making it an intriguing and cherished monument.
