The much-anticipated final episode of The Long Dark promises to be the most expansive and engaging chapter yet. Episode Five is set to deliver “two to three times more cinematic and story content” than its predecessor, Episode Four, and is expected to be three to four times larger in scope.
Raphael van Lierop, the visionary founder and creative director of Hinterland, has opted to keep most details under wraps until the release of the first trailer. However, he did reveal that this new episode will introduce several new systems that have not been featured in previous episodes.
“Like many of you, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the completion of this story. Once it’s released, there’s no turning back. This episode needs to be more than just good—it has to be exceptional,” states van Lierop.
“We need to weave together the story threads from all previous episodes to complete the Wintermute saga. This is also about setting the stage for the future of The Long Dark. Therefore, expect to explore new environments and meet a host of new characters. Given the narrative demands, we’re concentrating more on the storyline this time, making the mission flow of Chapter Five more linear compared to earlier installments.”
Gamers will have the opportunity to guide both Mackenzie and Astrid in this concluding chapter, revisiting some beloved characters from earlier episodes.
“I can confidently say that The Long Dark is the most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken at Hinterland,” says Van Lierop. “These words might not resonate with you until you experience the game firsthand, but they are intended to convey the ambitious vision driving this episode.”
