In a significant development, Start Network has successfully obtained an insurance payout of $727,855 through the innovative African Risk Capacity (ARC) Replica programme. This crucial financial support is poised to aid 10,500 households in Somalia who are currently enduring the harsh impacts of persistent droughts.
The ARC Replica program, a collaborative effort between ARC and humanitarian bodies such as Start Network and the World Food Programme (WFP), is designed to proactively address climate challenges. By enabling its partners to purchase replica insurance policies, the program expands climate risk insurance coverage and ensures swift, efficient humanitarian responses in the most vulnerable regions across Africa.
This timely disbursement underscores the essential role of preemptive assistance in safeguarding at-risk populations. With predictable funding, communities can enhance their climate resilience, equipping them to better withstand and adapt to recurring environmental shocks. Additionally, this initiative’s success highlights the strong synergy among stakeholders in Somalia, all working in concert to mitigate drought effects from the onset.
Anna Farina, Head of Crisis Anticipation & Risk Financing at Start Network, emphasized, “This payout exemplifies how disaster risk financing enables early action, mitigating the devastating effects of drought.”
