The emergence of a new Covid-19 variant known as “LP.8.1” has been noted in Australia, as the variant continues to gradually proliferate across the region. This variant was first identified in the country in July 2024, according to reports from SBS News.
Currently, “LP.8.1” has ascended to become the third most prevalent variant among Covid-19 cases in New South Wales (NSW), one of Australia’s states. Fortunately, the symptoms associated with “LP.8.1” do not appear to be more severe than those observed in other circulating variants.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it had placed the “LP.8.1” variant under surveillance due to its spreading pattern across the globe.
In Australia, approximately 45,000 new Covid-19 cases have been recorded so far this year, with around 260 individuals currently receiving hospital treatment for the virus.
