Senator Cory Booker embarked on an unprecedented all-night speech on the Senate floor, continuing into the early hours of Tuesday, to draw attention to what he described as a national crisis caused by the Trump administration’s reckless policies. The New Jersey Democrat initiated his speech at 7 p.m. on Monday and persisted in addressing the chamber, which remained largely vacant, until 8 a.m. Eastern time.
This marathon speech was seemingly part of a broader strategic effort by Democrats to regain momentum and more actively counter President Trump. Senator Booker segmented his extensive remarks, focusing on various policy areas, such as health care, education, immigration, and national security.
He criticized what he asserted to be the administration’s intention to reduce Medicaid funding, among other critical programs. Although the White House has denied any plans to cut Medicaid benefits, President Trump and his allies have criticized Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security, citing alleged waste, fraud, and abuse.
Mr. Booker declared, “I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able,” underscoring his belief that the nation was facing a significant crisis. As dawn approached, Mr. Booker, a former presidential candidate, remained steadfastly committed to his cause, stating, “I’m rip-roaring and ready,” and affirming, “I’m wide awake. I’m going to stand here for as many hours as I can.”
