In September of last year, Alan Thomas, the former UK CEO of Simply Business, took the helm as CEO of Ripe Insurance. Thomas expressed his confidence and excitement about steering the ultra-specialist insurance provider into its next chapter. During a recent interview with Insurance Business, he shared insights into the burgeoning opportunities within this niche segment.
Ripe Insurance: Covering Passions
Ripe Insurance aims to safeguard people’s passions, whether that involves insuring hobbies or niche-oriented small businesses. “Our goal is to simplify the search for tailored, high-quality insurance policies for individual passions,” Thomas explained. This could range from leisure crafts and DJ equipment to jewellery, watches, and small businesses where passions become professions.
Post-COVID Trends and Market Leadership
Thomas highlighted a post-COVID surge in individuals pursuing their passions, positioning Ripe as a market leader in personal trainer insurance. “While the initial surge dwindled, we’ve observed a steady increase over five years,” he noted. The cycling insurance sector experienced a significant bounce in 2021, which later slowed, but is now regaining momentum thanks to e-bikes.
Ripe’s Unique Market Position
Reflecting on his decision to join Ripe, Thomas emphasized the company’s strong position to deliver unique products for clients often overlooked by larger insurers. The agility and speed required to create bespoke products are challenging for big firms, but Ripe’s technology platform excels in serving these niche markets digitally.
Specialized Insurance: A Growing Necessity
Looking ahead, Thomas sees specialist insurance playing an increasingly vital role. “Large insurers heavily target standard risks, leaving unique needs underserved. Our focus is on delivering relevant, high-quality products at the right time and price,” he stated. Specialist providers can empower consumers to engage in deeper insurance discussions, beyond standard motor and home covers, into areas of personal interest.
Opportunities in Specialized Insurance
Thomas identified significant opportunities in the self-employed micro-business space, such as coverage for hair and beauty technicians working from clients’ homes. “In the UK, approximately 5.5 to 6.5 million small business owners could benefit from coverage,” he said. Ripe is keen to promote the accessibility and affordability of their insurance offerings.
Additionally, Thomas sees potential in peripheral markets, including second properties or overseas homes. “We can recognize and capitalize on these niches more effectively than others,” he noted. Exploring segments like pet insurance, Ripe aims to focus on niche areas within larger markets, further enhancing their specialist offerings.
