OpenAI has proudly introduced GPT-4.1, an advanced iteration of its multi-modal artificial intelligence model, succeeding last year’s GPT-4o. This latest model demonstrates superior capabilities in numerous areas, notably in coding and executing instructions.
Accessible in three distinct versions, GPT-4.1 is now ready for developers, offering additional options: GPT-4.1 Mini and GPT-4.1 Nano. These variants align with the previous model’s offerings, providing a more economical solution with the Mini model while the Nano model emerges as OpenAI’s most compact, swiftest, and cost-effective model ever.
All three variants are capable of managing up to 1 million contexts comprising text, images, or videos. This is a significant enhancement from the GPT-4o’s 128,000 context capacity. The models exhibit outstanding reliability in filtering distractions and identifying pertinent information across both extended and brief contexts.
26% more economical than GPT-4o, GPT-4.1 presents a notable reduction in cost, a crucial factor following the introduction of the ultra-efficient DeepSeek. This launch aligns with OpenAI’s strategy to phase out the two-year-old GPT-4 model from ChatGPT by April 30. The company asserts that its refined updates to GPT-4o establish it as a natural successor.
Additionally, OpenAI has announced that the GPT-4.5 preview version will be withdrawn from the API on July 14, as GPT-4.1 delivers comparable or superior performance in essential functions at a significantly reduced cost and latency.
OpenAI’s eagerly awaited major model, GPT-5, faces a delay. CEO Sam Altman revealed on April 4 that the release of GPT-5, initially anticipated in May, is postponed by several months.
