The powerful RTX 5090 graphics card from Nvidia is once again in the spotlight due to a recurring issue with melting cables. A Reddit user, known by the nickname “Roachard,” experienced a severe burning problem with his MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC, a card that cost him over $3,000. The incident not only damaged the graphics card but also affected the connected power supply unit (PSU).
The user was utilizing Corsair’s $230, 80 Plus Platinum certified, ATX 3.0-compatible SF1000L model, directly connecting the cable to the PSU without any use of extension cables or overclocking. Initially, he thought the problem was isolated to the graphics card side, but later discovered that the connector attached to the PSU was also swollen and melting its plastic components.
This issue echoes similar challenges previously encountered with the RTX 4090. Back then, improper cable fitting and heating issues led Nvidia to introduce the new 12V-2×6 design. However, it appears that even these redesigned cables have not fully addressed the problem.
Earlier this year, the renowned overclocker Der8auer conducted tests on a similar setup and observed that the connector on the PSU side reached temperatures of up to 150 degrees Celsius, with a significant current imbalance between the cables. Some lines drew minimal current while others were excessively loaded.
Although such incidents are rare, their occurrence even with original cables shakes user confidence. For a high-end and costly piece of hardware like the RTX 5090, encountering such issues is unacceptable.
