The second round of negotiations between Iran and the United States is scheduled to occur in Rome, as reported by Iranian state television. Oman will continue its role as a mediator, just as it did during the initial discussions.

Background and Mediation

In 2018, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear agreement with Iran. Last month, President Trump reached out to Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing direct nuclear negotiations through a letter. In response, Iran communicated back via Oman.

Progress and Developments

Following this exchange, indirect talks were held in Oman on April 12. Both nations described these discussions as “positive and constructive.” Consequently, they agreed to reconvene on April 19.

While initial reports from US media suggested that the next round would occur in Rome, Italy, Iran later clarified that after further consultations, the decision was made to continue talks in Oman.

Statements and Stances

Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for the Middle East appointed by US President Donald Trump, stated on Fox News that the US has accepted Iran’s uranium enrichment level of 3.67 percent, as stipulated in the previous nuclear agreement. However, Witkoff emphasized that Iran should cease its uranium enrichment activities altogether.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Erakchi expressed Iran’s willingness to address international concerns regarding its nuclear program while firmly stating that Iran would not negotiate its right to enrich uranium.
