The recent update to Google Photos introduces the ‘Ultra HDR’ tool, a beloved feature among Android users, now accessible to a broader audience. This innovative tool enhances your photos by infusing them with more light and depth, resulting in images that are both vibrant and detailed. While the Ultra HDR format retains the familiar JPEG extension, it is fundamentally different, offering clearer and brighter images that also save on storage space.
Interestingly, even on screens lacking HDR support, photos in this format will display in a standard way, albeit without the HDR enhancements. This feature is part of Google Photos version 7.24 and can be found in the ‘Setup’ menu, replacing the previous HDR effect. However, its release is gradual and dependent on server-side updates, so not all users will have immediate access.
Upon applying the Ultra HDR setting, users can control the effect’s intensity using a slider. While this offers flexibility, it is advisable to maintain a balanced setting to preserve the image’s natural appeal. To verify whether a photo employs Ultra HDR, simply view its information page; if ‘Ultra HDR’ appears alongside the pixel count, the image has been enhanced with this new format.
This tool proves particularly beneficial for revisiting and enhancing older photographs that hold sentimental value or could benefit from a touch-up.
