After years of anticipation and user requests, Instagram is finally addressing the needs of its iPad user base by developing an app specifically tailored for the device. Currently, iPad users face the inconvenience of using the Instagram app designed for iPhones, which results in a suboptimal experience on larger screens. The app, when used on an iPad, displays at an awkward magnification, irking users for quite some time.
This strategic move by Meta is seen as an effort to boost user engagement, especially amidst rising global concerns over the future of platforms like TikTok. According to insider information, while the iPad app is actively being developed, the precise release date remains uncertain. There is an ever-present possibility that the project might be shelved before it sees the light of day.
Historically, Instagram’s leadership has either sidelined or postponed this feature request. Back in 2021, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, acknowledged that an iPad app “would be nice” and mentioned it was indeed considered, but team resources were a limiting factor. A year later, he described these requests as “finally doable”, grouping the iPad app with other long-awaited features like dark mode and scheduled posts.
In essence, Instagram is making strides towards launching an iPad-specific app. While the exact timing remains a mystery, the long-standing question of “why isn’t it here yet?” is beginning to find its answer.
