Arex Sigorta issued a written press release regarding the statements made by Uğur Gülen, President of the Insurance Association of Turkey (TSB), in the ‘Overview’ programme on NTV on 14 April 2025. In the statement shared on the company’s official LinkedIn account, a detailed response was given to the public with a harsh reaction to Gülen’s statements.
‘It is sad and thought-provoking to make statements like a public authority’
In Arex Sigorta’s statement, it was stated that TSB President Uğur Gülen did not speak as a representative of the sector, but as a public authority. ‘With these statements, Mr Gülen has shown that he does not have the seriousness and qualifications to be a representative of the sector,’ the statement said.
‘It is unacceptable for him to pass judgement on a judicial process’
It was stated that Uğur Gülen spoke as if he had detailed information about the process regarding the decisions taken by the SEDDK regarding Arex Sigorta and added: ‘Mr Gülen seems to have confused whether he is the Chairman of the SEDDK or the President of TSB’. It was also argued that these statements could affect the judicial process and that Gülen had lost his impartiality.
‘He made statements that would create distrust and panic’
Arex Insurance emphasised that Gülen’s statements created an air of panic in the sector and caused distrust among the insured. In particular, it was stated that statements such as ‘When the amount of money in the companies’ accounts is zero, no more payments are made’ harm the sector and may accelerate policy cancellations.
‘Statements that hinder the development of the sector’
Gülen’s statements on increasing entry barriers to the insurance sector were also criticised. Arex Sigorta argued that this attitude would hinder competition and development in the sector and lead to trustification.
‘We invite him to resign’
For all these reasons, Arex Sigorta invited Uğur Gülen, President of the Insurance Association of Turkey, to resign at the end of the statement. ‘We invite Mr Gülen, who has lost his impartiality and his qualifications to be the President of the Union by making statements regarding transactions that have not yet been finalised at the judicial stage, to resign,’ the statement said.
