Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has revealed that while discussions are in the preliminary phases, some American companies have expressed interest in partnering on rare earth metals projects within Russia. These discussions align with U.S. President Donald Trump’s broader strategy to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where mineral extraction could play a pivotal role. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously indicated that the United States might be intrigued by joint exploration endeavors, given Russia’s position as the holder of the world’s fifth-largest reserves of these critical metals, essential for technologies such as lasers and military equipment.
Despite the mutual interest, no formal agreements have been established, primarily due to the existing sanctions that limit U.S. companies’ operations in Russia. Peskov noted, “There are no details here yet, but the interest is obvious. The interest is mutual, because we are talking about mutually beneficial projects.” This sentiment underscores the potential for collaboration that could benefit both nations in the realm of rare earth metals.
