The renowned Blue Lagoon tourist destination in southwest Iceland has been evacuated following a surge in seismic activity around nearby volcanic craters.
According to the Icelandic broadcaster RUV, the tremors were detected in the town of Grindavik at approximately 06:30 local time.
Authorities decided to evacuate the Blue Lagoon as a precautionary measure, fearing that the seismic activity could potentially trigger a volcanic eruption.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported in a statement that more than 200 earthquakes have been detected in the area since the onset of this heightened seismic activity.
