Overview of Aon’s 2025 Reinsurance Market Report

Aon, a leading global risk management and professional services firm, has unveiled its 2025 April Reinsurance Market Dynamics Report. This report highlights a positive climate for buyers during the critical April 1 renewal period, particularly focusing on Asia and Japan.

Reinsurers have demonstrated a strong willingness to allocate additional capacity, with a notable increase in available coverage throughout the Asia Pacific region. This optimistic market scenario is attributed to improving results and a relatively stable natural catastrophe landscape, fostering broad support for insurers and an overall favorable renewal experience.

Key Renewal Insights for Asia-Pacific

April 1 is a pivotal renewal period for the Asia-Pacific region, with 60% of its treaty business undergoing renewal, and Japan seeing an impressive 95% renewal rate. Aon’s analysis reveals a high demand for reinsurance capacity, with reinsurers viewing the Asia-Pacific as a vital area for growth and diversification.

Despite the Los Angeles wildfires in January, which set the stage for renewal discussions, Aon reports these events had minimal impact on capacity, pricing, or terms for the region’s renewals.

Facultative Capacity Growth

A noteworthy development is the expansion in facultative capacity, highlighted by Aon’s launch of the Marlin APAC facility, offering up to $15 million of dedicated capacity per risk for property and renewable energy sectors.

With reinsurers increasingly eager to provide additional capacity and competition intensifying, insurers were able to secure favorable terms, especially in markets like Japan and South Korea. Aon notes mid-to-high single-digit rate reductions were typical, with some territories experiencing double-digit reductions.

Market Strategies and Future Prospects

George Attard, CEO APAC for Reinsurance Solutions at Aon, commented: “At April 1, our clients continued to benefit from favorable reinsurance market and pricing conditions, supported by Aon’s extensive advocacy, analytical, and transactional expertise. Opportunities for insurers to explore frequency protections and top-up covers are anticipated as we approach mid-year renewals, particularly for insurers focusing on high performance characteristics.”

Attard further added, “Facultative capacity has grown across the board, with reinsurers competing more aggressively. This creates more opportunities for insurers to utilize facultative reinsurance to support growth plans and manage volatility.”

Looking ahead, Aon predicts buyer-friendly conditions will persist, underpinned by strong demand and increasing capacity. As further renewals occur in Greater China, Australia, and New Zealand, the broker expects similar favorable results.

Impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred

Early 2025 witnessed Tropical Cyclone Alfred affecting Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. Aon reported the market impact was limited, with the newly introduced Cyclone Reinsurance Pool (CRP) absorbing most insured losses.

Facultative Market Variations

In the facultative market, insurers are strategically employing their facultative reinsurance to optimize portfolios and support regional growth opportunities. The growing capacity and competitive nature of this market, coupled with Aon’s data-driven insights, are effectively assisting insurers in meeting their capital management and risk transfer needs.

Regional variations persist in the facultative market. South Korea faces intense competition for large property risks, while Japan remains stable with a long-term perspective from both insurers and reinsurers. Taiwan has adopted a more cautious approach due to recent performance concerns, and regulatory changes in India present challenges for cross-border reinsurance support.

Aon’s report suggests a positive and expanding outlook for the Asia-Pacific reinsurance market, driven by increasing capacity, robust competition, and favorable pricing conditions. These elements present opportunities for insurers to manage risk effectively, expand their portfolios, and capitalize on a dynamic and evolving market.
