After a prolonged period without updates, Google has finally shared the current usage statistics for various Android versions. This release provides the first insight into the adoption rate of Android 15, which had its initial debut in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) in September 2024. Following its AOSP release, Pixel devices received the update the subsequent month, while companies like OnePlus and Nothing swiftly rolled out the stable version to their devices. However, Samsung’s deployment of One UI 7, based on Android 15, has been sluggish and inconsistent.
Android 15’s Limited Reach
Presently, Android 15 is installed on a mere 4.5% of devices as of April 1. Samsung’s recent efforts to distribute One UI 7 are not yet reflected in these statistics, but even with those figures included, the adoption rate would likely remain modest.
Popularity of Older Versions
Examining other versions, Android 14 emerges as the most widely used, capturing 24.4% of the market. Trailing closely is Android 13 with a 16.8% share. Remarkably, older versions like Android 9 and 10 are still prevalent across numerous devices. This persistence of older versions is largely due to insufficient software support from smartphone manufacturers. Particularly in budget models, the duration of software support is notably brief.
While manufacturers such as Samsung have made strides in extending update cycles, the timeliness and consistency of updates remain problematic, leading to the continued use of outdated Android versions.
