Following an earlier 4.0 magnitude tremor, Istanbul was rocked by a much stronger 6.2 magnitude earthquake. This latest quake, with its epicenter in the Marmara Sea, sent citizens rushing into the streets in fear.
The 6.2 magnitude earthquake was felt at 12:49 PM on April 23, 2025. The epicenter lay off the coast of Silivri, Istanbul, approximately 23 kilometers away, as reported by the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). The quake struck at a depth of 6.92 kilometers.
Located at 40.86 degrees north latitude and 28.24444 degrees east longitude, the earthquake’s impact was felt across Istanbul and neighboring provinces. Although the tremor induced widespread panic, initial reports have not indicated any casualties or significant property damage. Further assessments are underway to evaluate the full extent of the impact.
